From the Stage to the Surge: Zack Polanski’s Rise to Green Party Leader

Zack Polanski’s journey to the leadership of the Green Party of England and Wales is anything but traditional. Moving from a career in theatre to the helm of a surging political movement, his transformation mirrors the evolution of the Greens themselves—from a niche ecological party into a powerhouse of eco-populist, left-wing politics.

1. The Theatre Catalyst and the Lib Dem Debut

Unlike many career politicians, Polanski wasn’t a student politico. His political awakening came in his 30s through his work in the “Theatre of the Oppressed”—a dramatic form focused on exploring social justice and structural inequalities.

Looking to turn that activism into policy, he joined the Liberal Democrats in 2015. He quickly cut his teeth in local politics, running as a Lib Dem candidate in a 2015 Camden council by-election and a 2016 London Assembly race.

2. The 2017 Green Conversion

Polanski’s stint with the Lib Dems was short-lived. In 2017, inspired by conversations with former Green Party leader Natalie Bennett, he officially switched allegiances. His departure was driven by two core factors:

  • Foreign Policy: Deep disillusionment with the Lib Dems’ support for airstrikes in Syria.
  • Authenticity: A growing conviction that the Greens offered a more genuine vehicle for radical, progressive change.

3. A Rapid Rise Through the Ranks

Once inside the Green fold, Polanski’s ascent was meteoric:

  • 2021 | London Assembly: Elected as a Member of the London Assembly (AM), he used his platform as Environment Committee Chair to champion a Universal Basic Income (UBI), rent controls, and green retrofitting.
  • 2022 | Deputy Leadership: Elected Deputy Leader, he successfully built bridges between environmentalists and trade unions, popularizing the mantra that “a higher wage economy is a green economy.”

4. Leading the Eco-Populist Shift

In September 2025, Polanski secured a landslide victory, winning roughly 85% of the vote to become the Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales (succeeding Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay).

The New Strategy: Under his leadership, the Greens have leaned hard into a potent “eco-populist” narrative. Polanski has shifted the spotlight from purely conservationist messaging to aggressive, redistributive economics—targeting the “99% vs. the 1%” with demands for wealth taxes and public ownership.

This economic pivot has yielded massive dividends. Fueled by a historic by-election victory in Gorton and Denton and record-breaking local election results, Polanski has successfully captured a wave of left-leaning voters disillusioned by Labour’s shift to the center. Under his watch, the Greens are no longer just an environmental alternative—they are a formidable electoral force.
