Senate GOP Blocks Limit on Trump’s Iran War Powers for Fourth Time

Senate Republicans successfully blocked a Democratic-led effort to curb President Donald Trump’s authority to wage war against Iran. This marks the fourth unsuccessful attempt to pass such a resolution since the regional conflict ignited in late February.

The Vote Breakdown

The motion failed in a 52–47 vote, largely reflecting the sharp partisan divide over the current military strategy:

  • Defectors: Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was the sole Republican to support the limits, while Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) was the only Democrat to side with the GOP in blocking them.
  • The Mandate: The resolution, sponsored by Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), would have required the withdrawal of U.S. forces from hostilities unless Congress issued a formal declaration of war.

The Looming War Powers Deadline

The legislative push comes as the White House nears a critical legal threshold. Under the War Powers Act of 1973, the President has a 60-day window to conduct military operations before requiring congressional approval.

While the measure was defeated, Senate Democrats have signaled they intend to force repeated votes on the matter as the April deadline approaches, framing the campaign as an unauthorized “war of choice.”
