Airspace Closed and Cartel Designated

US President Donald Trump announced a stern warning via Truth Social, instructing “all airlines, pilots, drug dealers, and human traffickers” to consider the airspace above and surrounding Venezuela “closed entirely.” This move followed security concerns raised by the US aviation regulator regarding increased military activity in the area.

Concurrently, the Trump administration took a severe legal step by designating Venezuela’s Cartel of the Suns—allegedly run by senior military officials and led by Maduro—as a foreign terrorist organization.

Threats of In-Land Strikes

Amid rising tensions since early September, the US has been actively bombing suspected drug-running boats in the Caribbean. Trump hinted that this escalation is moving toward land-based operations, telling reporters, “The land is easier, but that’s going to start very soon.”

A Path for Diplomacy?

Despite the military pressure and threats, a diplomatic channel remains open. According to the New York Times, Trump and Maduro recently spoke on the phone to discuss the possibility of a face-to-face meeting. If this meeting takes place, it would be the first between a US President and Maduro, whom Washington considers an illegitimate leader and a drug trafficker.
