Trump Defends Indefinite Asylum Freeze Following Killing by Afghan Immigrant

US President Donald Trump is defending his order for a sweeping, indefinite freeze on asylum processing, escalating immigration restrictions in the wake of the killing of a National Guard member by an Afghan immigrant.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, the President signaled that the ban on asylum admissions for certain nations could last “a long time.”

“We have enough problems. We don’t want those people,” Trump stated.

The action follows the tragic incident on Wednesday near the White House that killed Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and critically wounded Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe. Authorities identified the gunman as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, who entered the US in 2021 during the Biden administration’s “Operation Allies Welcome” evacuation.

The administration has since suspended all asylum processing and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has frozen all immigration requests from Afghan nationals “indefinitely” pending a full vetting review.

Trump Blames Biden and Harris for Vetting Failures

Amid the crackdown, President Trump renewed his criticism of the previous administration.

On Truth Social, he wrote: “Crooked Joe Biden, Mayorkas, and so-called ‘Border Czar’ Kamala Harris really screwed our Country by letting anyone and everyone come in totally unchecked and unvetted.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed this sentiment, calling Biden-era vetting practices “an act of national self-sabotage” and asserting the suspect “should never have been in this country.”

Noem directly blamed the prior administration for the National Guard member’s death, stating: “The consequences of the shooting and the death of Sarah are directly on the shoulders of Joe Biden and his administration.”

She claimed the Biden administration “didn’t do a thorough investigation,” noting that Lakanwal’s application process began under the previous leadership. US officials now believe Lakanwal embraced extremist views after arriving in the United States.
