US Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, has died after being critically injured in a targeted, ambush-style shooting near the White House. The other victim, 24-year-old Guard member Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition and is fighting for his life.

The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, has been arrested. Officials confirmed Lakanwal is an Afghan national who spent years serving in the Zero Units, a secretive CIA-backed combat unit that fought the Taliban. Lakanwal arrived in the U.S. in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome. According to prosecutors, he drove over 2,500 miles from Washington state to D.C. to carry out the attack.
