SYDNEY, N.S. – Behind a wall-like performance from goaltender Bianca Birrittieri and a clinical defensive display, the United States Under-18 Women’s National Team defeated Canada 2-0 to capture the gold medal at the 2026 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship.

The victory marks the 10th gold medal for the American program and cements this roster’s place in history. The U.S. completed a “perfect” tournament run, never once trailing an opponent across all seven games played in Nova Scotia.

The Game Breakdown

The atmosphere at Centre 200 was electric, with a sellout crowd of over 4,800 fans cheering for the host nation. However, Team USA used disciplined positioning and quick transitions to take the air out of the building early.

  • The Breakthrough: Late in the first period, Emily Pohl struck first. Following a clean faceoff win by Talla Hansen, Pohl found a lane and beat Canadian goaltender Janelle LeBlanc to make it 1-0.
  • The Insurance: Canada surged in the second period, but the U.S. struck again on a counter-attack. Lindsay Stepnowski buried a rebound at 18:17, providing the crucial two-goal cushion.
  • The Wall: The story of the night was Bianca Birrittieri. Facing a relentless 38-shot barrage from the Canadians, Birrittieri remained calm and perfectly positioned, earning the shutout and the “Player of the Game” honors for the final.

Tournament Awards & Recognition

The IIHF Directorate recognized the dominant performance of several skaters following the gold-medal ceremony:

  • Best Forward: Jane Daley (USA) – Daley tied the all-time tournament record with 12 goals.
  • Best Defender: Chloe Giguere (CAN)
  • Best Goaltender: Bianca Birrittieri (USA)

“This group stayed connected from day one,” said U.S. Head Coach Liz Keady Norton. “To come into this environment, against a team as talented as Canada, and play with that level of composure is a testament to their character.”
