Overview of the Attacks

The NYPD reports that the driver targeted five individuals in quick succession, using what appeared to be a heavy metal object to strike them.

  • Targeted Strangers: The victims, including a woman at a bus stop and several pedestrians, suffered various head and facial injuries.
  • The Pursuit: Because the suspect was operating a distinct delivery vehicle, witnesses were able to alert police quickly. Officers intercepted the van in Maspeth, where the driver was taken into custody without further incident.

Background and Company Response

The suspect was employed by a Delivery Service Partner (DSP), an independent company contracted by Amazon for local deliveries.

  • Amazon’s Stance: The company confirmed the driver has been permanently banned from the platform and stated they are assisting law enforcement. They noted the individual had successfully passed a standard background check during the hiring process.
  • Motive Under Review: While the investigation is ongoing, initial reports suggest the driver may have experienced a severe psychological crisis during the shift.

The driver faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Assault in the Second Degree
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon
  • Reckless Endangerment

A judge has ordered a psychiatric evaluation to determine the suspect’s mental fitness as the legal proceedings move forward. The incident has sparked a broader conversation regarding the mental health support and vetting protocols for high-pressure delivery roles.
