Efforts for Hostage Repatriation

Netanyahu’s office confirmed that he spoke with the parents of Ran Gvili, the last Israeli hostage whose body is still held in Gaza.

  • Ran Gvili, 24, an officer in the Yasam elite police unit, was killed during the October 7, 2023, attack led by Hamas. His body was subsequently taken into Gaza.
  • On Friday, Netanyahu assured Gvili’s parents, Talik and Itzik, that Israel is making extensive efforts to bring him back for a “proper Jewish burial”.

The Prime Minister also contacted Thailand’s ambassador to Israel, updating him on the efforts to return the body of the only other slain hostage held in Gaza: Thai national Sudthisak Rinthalak.

  • Sudthisak Rinthalak, 43, was a laborer at the Beeri kibbutz and was among several Thai nationals killed on October 7. His death was officially confirmed in May 2024.
  • The government stated that Israeli forces are making “extensive efforts” to repatriate both bodies.

Public Demands for Immediate Action

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, the primary group representing the captives’ families, held another weekly rally at Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square. The event was aimed at maintaining pressure on Netanyahu’s government.

  • Slogans and Messaging: Demonstrators held placards featuring Gvili and Rinthalak, chanting “You are not alone, we stand with you.” Signs noted the long duration of the crisis, reading “Day 785; we leave no one behind.”
  • Unity and Importance: Attendees stressed that the remaining two hostages are just as important as the large groups previously held. Michal Yaniv, 72, emphasized: “It doesn’t matter that only two are left: two is like 70. Each one is equally important.”
  • Political Accountability: Yaniv also indicated that protests against the government for its failure surrounding October 7 would commence once the remaining hostages are returned.

Hostage Count Context

The current efforts focus on the final two bodies remaining in Gaza from the October 7 abductions.

  • A US-sponsored ceasefire agreement, which took effect on October 10, required Hamas to return 48 hostages.
  • So far, 46 have been returned, including the body of an Israeli soldier abducted more than a decade ago.
