Munetaka Murakami Out 4-6 Weeks

The White Sox just took a massive hit to their unexpected postseason push. Rookie phenom Munetaka Murakami has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain.

He is expected to miss four to six weeks, sidelining him until mid-to-late July. Infielder Jacob Gonzalez has been called up to take his roster spot.

How it Happened

During the 3rd inning of Friday’s 4-3 win over the Tigers, Murakami busted it down the line to beat out a potential double play. While he saved the out, he immediately clutched his right thigh and was removed from the game. MRI results later confirmed the Grade 2 strain.

The Impact: Sidelining an MVP Campaign

Before the injury, the “South Side Samurai” was completely rewriting the rookie record books and serving as the engine for a surprising 31-27 White Sox team.

Murakami’s production will be near-impossible to replace:

  • Historic Power: He leads the American League with 20 home runs—making him the first rookie since 1901 to hit 20 homers before June.
  • Elite Plate Discipline: Thanks to 44 walks, he carries a massive .938 OPS (.240/.378/.560 slash line) with 41 RBIs.
  • Iron Man Presence: He had started all 57 games for Chicago this season.

Fun Fact: Murakami’s 20 homers are the most by a White Sox player in the team’s first 57 games since Hall of Famer Jim Thome in 2006.

Next Man Up on the South Side

With Murakami out for the next month and a half, manager Will Venable will have to shuffle the infield. Expect Miguel Vargas to handle primary duties at first base, with Luisangel Acuña and Colson Montgomery logging heavy reps on the left side of the diamond.

If Chicago can just tread water and stay in the AL Central race for the next 40 days, they’ll get the ultimate trade-deadline reinforcement when their star rookie returns.
