Maduro Dances to 'Peace, Yes, War, No' Amid Escalating US Pressure

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro appeared defiant against intensifying US pressure this week, celebrating at the Miraflores Palace with hundreds of thousands of supporters. Amid sanctions and US military operations in the Caribbean, the 63-year-old leader broke into dance to a remix of his own slogan, “Paz si, guerra no” (Peace, yes, war, no). He also recently paid tribute to John Lennon’s “Imagine” as an anthem for peace.

The celebration comes as US-Venezuela tensions mount, fueled by allegations of illegal drug flow and recent American strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels that have killed at least 83 people. The US has designated the Cartel de los Soles—which Washington claims includes Maduro—as a foreign terrorist organization.

Maduro denies involvement in criminal activities. On Sunday, President Trump confirmed he had spoken with the Venezuelan leader, though he declined to provide details.

Venezuelan President Maduro Defiantly Celebrates Amid Sanctions and US Military Pressure

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro displayed an act of defiance on Monday, celebrating a public ceremony with massive support at the Presidential Palace even as the United States escalates pressure regarding alleged drug trafficking.

Defiant Public Display

Maduro, accompanied by his wife Cilia Flores and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, swore in new community-based organizations before a crowd of hundreds of thousands. The President, wearing a red cap, danced to an electronic track featuring his peace slogans, “Paz si, guerra no” (Peace, yes, war, no). The spectacle came despite the Trump administration’s ongoing campaign of sanctions and military measures. A week prior, Maduro also showcased his dance moves to the same tune and recently praised John Lennon’s “Imagine,” urging youths to read its lyrics as an inspiration for peace.

Mounting US Tensions

Tensions between Caracas and Washington have heightened considerably. The US campaign includes American strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean and Pacific, which have reportedly resulted in at least 83 deaths since September. The US has also targeted the Venezuelan leadership by designating the Cartel de los Soles, which it claims involves Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization. Maduro has consistently denied all criminal allegations.

In a related development, the Venezuelan National Assembly suspended a planned session to debate forming a commission to investigate the US boat strikes.

President Trump confirmed on Sunday that he had spoken with his Venezuelan counterpart but declined to elaborate on the details of their discussion.
