Imran Khan's Sister Meets Jailed Ex-PM, Quashing Death Rumors Amidst Protest Threats

Uzma Khanum, a sister of the former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, was finally granted access to meet her brother in Adiala Jail today. This meeting takes place as his party, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), threatens to escalate already high tensions with a planned wave of mass protests across Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The former cricketer-turned-politician has been held in a web of legal cases for over two years. In recent weeks, widespread speculation that Khan had been murdered in custody had surged on social media, fueled by the fact that his family members had been denied visitation rights for several weeks despite existing court orders.

To press authorities to restore these visitation rights, Imran Khan’s supporters had called for a massive show of protest in the capital and Rawalpindi. This looming “showdown” prompted the Shehbaz Sharif-led government to ban large public gatherings and implement tight security, effectively transforming Rawalpindi into a fortified area.

Uzma Khan was taken inside the prison premises to meet her brother, a move that is expected to temporarily quell the death rumors and possibly ease the immediate threat of widespread political unrest.
