Imran Khan Faces Treason Warning from Pakistan Government

The government of Pakistan, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has issued a severe warning to jailed former PM Imran Khan and his party (PTI), signaling that treason cases against him are a possibility.

This escalation comes shortly after the military establishment publicly attacked Khan for spreading an “anti-army” narrative, which the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General labeled a “national security threat.”

Endorsement of the Anti-Army Stance

Sharif’s advisor and Senator, Rana Sanaullah, confirmed that the government fully endorses the military’s position.

  • Treason Ruled Out? Sanaullah stated that a treason case against the PTI founder “cannot be ruled out.”
  • Government Backing: He stressed that the military’s message was “clear” and “fully endorsed” by the Shehbaz Sharif government.
  • Serious Consequences: Sanaullah explicitly cautioned Khan and PTI leaders not to take the warning lightly, indicating that doing so could lead to “serious consequences.”

Allegations of Instability and Amplification

The government accused Khan’s party of actively working against national stability, particularly regarding its narrative.

  • Alleged Link to Terrorism: Sanaullah alleged that the narrative used by terrorists in the Jaffer Express attack was being amplified “simultaneously by Indian, Afghan, and PTI-linked media.”
  • Inflammatory Tone: The government interpreted a social media post by Khan after meeting his sister in jail as having an “inflammatory” tone, further justifying their stance.
  • “Adiala Tehreek-e-Insaf”: Sanaullah mocked the PTI, predicting that it would soon be reduced to “Adiala Tehreek-e-Insaf,” suggesting the party’s leadership is sealing its own fate through confrontation.

Background of Khan’s Conflict with the Military

The current crisis highlights the open hostility between the former Prime Minister and the establishment.

  • The Munir Feud: Khan’s deep-seated conflict with Chief of Defence Forces (formerly Army Chief) Asim Munir dates back to 2019, when Khan removed him as ISI Director.
  • Current Incarceration: Khan has been held in Adiala Jail since August 2023, following convictions in graft cases, including a 14-year sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust case and charges in the Cipher case (leaking state secrets).
  • Rising Volatility: The military’s consolidation of power, combined with rising insurgencies and intense political polarization, is pushing Pakistan toward one of its most volatile periods in recent history.
