The suspect, 29, drove over 2,500 miles from Washington state to Washington D.C. before opening fire with a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver.

Casualties

  • Deceased: Specialist Sarah Beckstrom (20)
  • Critical Condition: Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe (24)

Suspect’s Background and Entry

  • CIA Service: Lakanwal was a member of the highly secretive, CIA-backed Zero Units in Afghanistan, serving as a guard and later a team leader who handled GPS tracking.
  • US Entry: He was brought to the United States in 2021 via Operation Allies Welcome due to his prior work with U.S. government forces.
  • Current Charges: Assault with intent to kill while armed, and a firearms charge.

Political Fallout

The incident has triggered a sharp political response. Donald Trump labelled the shooting an “act of terror” and announced that the U.S. would:

  1. Suspend all immigration requests from Afghans.
  2. Re-examine every Afghan immigrant who entered the country under the Biden administration.
  3. Deploy an extra 500 National Guard members to Washington D.C.
