Church in Wales Makes Same-Sex Blessings Permanent

In a landmark decision today, April 16, 2026, the Governing Body of the Church in Wales officially voted to make the blessing of same-sex marriages and civil partnerships a permanent part of its liturgy.

The Details

The practice was originally introduced in 2021 as a five-year “experimental” provision. With that trial set to expire this September, the church held a definitive vote to incorporate these blessings into the Book of Common Prayer.

The motion passed with a decisive two-thirds majority across all three governing orders:

  • Bishops: 5–0 (Unanimous)
  • Clergy: 32–7
  • Laity: 48–8

What This Means for the Future

While this update secures the right for couples to receive a formal blessing after a civil ceremony, the Church in Wales does not yet perform same-sex marriage ceremonies itself.

However, this move is widely seen as a precursor to full marriage equality. Following extensive “listening exercises” held throughout 2025, the Bench of Bishops has confirmed that a formal vote to allow same-sex marriages in church is slated for April 2027.

Note on Conscience: The provision remains optional for clergy; those who have theological objections are not required to perform the blessings.
