You can typically check your status 24 hours after e-filing or 4 weeks after mailing a paper return.
- Gather Your Data: Have your Social Security Number (or ITIN), your exact filing status, and the exact whole dollar amount of your expected refund ready.
- Access the Tracker: Visit the official IRS “Where’s My Refund?“ page or open the IRS2Go mobile app.
- Check Your Status: Enter your details to see if your return has been Received, Approved, or Sent.
For Indian Taxpayers (Income Tax Department)
For the current Assessment Year (AY 2026-27), you can track your refund directly through the e-Filing portal.
- Log In: Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and sign in with your PAN and password.
- Find Your Returns: Navigate to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns.
- Verify Progress: Select ‘View Details’ for the current year to see if your refund has been processed or if it’s currently with the refund banker.
Common Reasons for Delays
If your refund is taking longer than the standard 21 days (US) or 4 weeks (India), check for these common issues:
- Mismatched Details: Ensure your name and ID numbers (SSN/PAN) match your official records.
- Bank Validation: In India, ensure your bank account is pre-validated on the portal. In the US, double-check your routing/account numbers.
- Manual Review: Returns claiming specific credits or those with math errors often require a manual look by a tax officer, which adds time.
Quick Tip: Using Direct Deposit is the fastest way to get your money. Physical checks can take several additional weeks to arrive by mail.
