Amazon customers who failed to receive refunds or were incorrectly charged for returned merchandise may be eligible for payments under a $309.5 million class-action settlement.

While some Amazon (AMZN) settlement payments were issued automatically, others have until Dec. 1, 2026, to file a claim.

The fund is part of a broader settlement that topped $1 billion. That total includes roughly $600 million in refunds that Amazon has already issued. The final approval hearing is scheduled for March.

What the Amazon returns settlement is about

The settlement stems from a 2023 class action lawsuit that alleged Amazon failed to properly process refunds for returned products for nearly nine years.

While “Amazon promises customers ‘free, no hassle returns,’ it routinely … fails to issue refunds or re-charges customers who have returned items in compliance with Amazon’s refund and exchange policies because of defects in Amazon’s return and refund processes, often incorrectly claiming that the return had not been received by Amazon,” the lawsuit claims.

Plaintiffs also alleged that Amazon believed “customers did not notice” the return failures, some of which resulted from “human error.”

Amazon denied any wrongdoing, and as part of the settlement, changed some of its return and refund operations for up to two years. Among the changes, the online retailer agreed to monitor return processing times and notify customers when refunds are approved or denied.

Who qualifies for a settlement payout?

Amazon customers are eligible for the settlement payout if they initiated a return or refund for a physical product between Sept. 5, 2017, and Feb. 12, 2026, and did not receive a refund, the refund was delayed or for an incorrect amount, or they received a refund and then were later incorrectly charged again for the returned product.

A final settlement court hearing will be held on March 16, 2027.

How much are the refund settlement payments?

No average payments have been reported so far, and each payout varies based on the amount of unpaid, late, or reversed refunds.

How to file a claim

The claim form is available on the official settlement website, ReturnSettlement.com. Claimants must provide information regarding the order related to the refund in question, including:

  • The order number
  • Product description
  • The date the refund was requested
  • The refund amount requested
  • And the reason the refund was rejected, if known

Additional information or documentation may be required.

Submit claim forms online or postmarked by Dec. 1, 2026.

For additional information, or to request a claim form, call 888-553-4246 or send mail to Amazon Return Policy Litigation, Attn: Claim Request, PO Box 59, East Brunswick, NJ 08816-9998.

How do I know if I qualify for a payout from this settlement?

You qualify if you requested a return or refund for a physical Amazon product between Sept. 5, 2017, and Feb. 12, 2026, and either failed to receive your refund, received the wrong amount or a late payment, or were incorrectly re-charged after returning the item.

Do I need to submit a claim form to get paid?

It depends on which subclass group your order falls into:
Subclass A: If Amazon’s internal records show an unissued or incorrect refund, your payout is automatic—no claim form is required.
Subclass B: If your disputed return isn’t flagged in Amazon’s automated data, you must submit a claim form online at ReturnSettlement.com
by December 1, 2026.

How much money will I receive from the settlement?

There is no set average or fixed payout amount. Payouts vary per person based on the specific value of the unpaid, late, or incorrectly re-charged refunds associated with your orders.

What information do I need to file a claim?

When filling out the form on ReturnSettlement.com
, you will need to provide:
Your Amazon Order Number
Product description
Date and amount of the requested refund
Reason for the dispute or rejection (if known)
Proof of tender (e.g., shipping/drop-off receipt, bank statement, or order history showing the return attempt)

When will settlement payments actually be issued?

Payments will be distributed after the court holds its Final Approval Hearing on March 16, 2027, provided the judge approves the settlement and any subsequent appeals are resolved. Payouts will be issued via your choice of direct deposit, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, pre-paid card, or Amazon gift card.
