The King of the Coast: Nathan Rourke Signs Through 2028

The BC Lions have officially secured their foundation, announcing on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, that they have signed star quarterback Nathan Rourke to a multi-year extension. The deal keeps the reigning Most Outstanding Player (MOP) in Vancouver through the 2028 season, effectively ending any speculation about his immediate future.

Previously slated to become a free agent after 2026, the 27-year-old Victoria native has chosen to double down on his “lifelong dream” of leading his hometown team.

A Season for the History Books

The extension comes on the heels of Rourke’s legendary 2025 campaign, which saw him cement himself as the premier talent in the CFL:

  • Passing Dominance: He threw for 5,290 yards, shattering Russ Jackson’s 1969 record for the most passing yards in a single season by a Canadian.
  • Dual-Threat Threat: Beyond his 31 passing touchdowns, he led all quarterbacks with 564 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground.
  • Hardware: Capped the year by winning both the George Reed Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian awards.

The “Face of the CFL”

Lions General Manager Ryan Rigmaiden didn’t mince words about the significance of the deal:

“Nathan has developed into the best player in the league and the face of the CFL. Extending him through 2028 puts us in the best possible position to win and sends the right message to our fans and the league.”

Financially, the deal ensures Rourke remains the highest-paid player in the CFL, continuing a historic trend for Canadian athletes in the league. Last season, his earnings were reported at approximately $624,000.

Looking Ahead to 2026

With Rourke locked in, the Lions (who finished 11–7 in 2025) now shift their focus to CFL Free Agency, which officially opens on February 10. The goal remains singular: ending a championship drought that stretches back to 2011 and bringing the Grey Cup back to the West Coast.
