India Slams Pakistan's Airstrikes on Afghan Civilians at UN Security Council

India has strongly denounced Pakistan’s recent airstrikes in Afghanistan during a session of the UN Security Council (UNSC), labeling the attacks as a “grave breach of international law” and a clear “act of war” against a fragile nation.

Parvathaneni Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered the condemnation, highlighting several critical points:

  • Attack on Civilians: India condemned the strikes, which reportedly killed women, children, and local cricketers, and expressed deep concern over the violation of international law and the threat to regional stability.
  • Violation of UN Charter: Harish stressed that these actions against a “fragile and vulnerable LLDC (Land-Locked Developing Country) nation” attempting to rebuild constitute a “blatant violation of the UN Charter and international law.”
  • “Trade and Transit Terrorism”: New Delhi raised “grave concern” over Pakistan’s repeated closure of border access for landlocked Afghanistan, calling the practice “trade and transit terrorism” that violates WTO norms.
  • Support for Afghanistan: India reaffirmed its unwavering support for the “territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Afghanistan.”
  • Terror Threat: India urged coordinated international action to prevent UN-designated terror groups—including ISIL, Al Qaida, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, and Jaish-e-Mohammed—from operating across borders.
  • Pragmatic Engagement: Harish called for a “pragmatic engagement” with the Taliban, arguing that a policy should “incentivize positive actions” instead of relying on punitive-only approaches.

The denouncement comes amid fresh clashes between the Taliban and Pakistani forces, erupting less than two months after the two sides agreed to a ceasefire brokered by Qatar and Turkey.
