The race to succeed Gavin Newsom saw another major shift this week. Former State Controller Betty Yee officially suspended her campaign on Monday, April 20, citing the “insurmountable” financial demands of a statewide run.

Yee’s decision was largely driven by two harsh realities:
- The Funding Gap: California’s media markets are some of the most expensive in the nation. Yee acknowledged that her campaign lacked the “financial runway” to compete with the airtime buys of frontrunners.
- The “Lockout” Fear: With several high-profile Democrats still on the ballot, party strategists are increasingly worried about a top-two primary lockout. If the Democratic vote remains too fractured, there is a statistical risk that two Republicans could advance to the general election.
A Week of Turbulence
Who’s Left?
The spotlight now intensifies on the remaining heavyweights:
- Katie Porter: Betting on a strong grassroots donor base.
- Xavier Becerra: Leveraging deep federal and state executive experience.
- Matt Mahan: Representing the more moderate, tech-focused wing of the party.
- Tom Steyer: Utilizing personal wealth to dominate the climate-change narrative.
On the Republican side, Steve Hilton—buoyed by a recent Trump endorsement—and Chad Bianco appear to be the primary beneficiaries of the thinning Democratic field, as they look to consolidate the GOP vote ahead of the June primary.
