Healey suggested that Vladimir Putin is actively providing tactical guidance to Iran, sharing lessons learned from the invasion of Ukraine to help Iranian drones bypass Western air defenses.
- Tactical Mirroring: Iranian strikes are now using the same saturation and flight-path patterns Russia uses to overwhelm Ukrainian targets.
- Mutual Benefit: While Iran initially provided hardware to Russia, the flow of information has reversed, with Russia now exporting “battle-tested” operational expertise back to Tehran.
Escalation in Erbil
The Defence Secretary confirmed that British forces played a direct role in regional defense overnight:
- RAF Success: UK forces stationed in Erbil, Iraq, intercepted and shot down two drones.
- US Casualties: Despite the interceptions, some drones reached their targets, resulting in reported casualties among US personnel.
- Current Briefing: Healey received these updates during a high-level briefing on the deteriorating security situation across the Middle East.
The Economic Incentive
Healey emphasized that Putin is the “one world leader” who stands to gain from the escalating conflict.
- Oil Prices: The instability has driven global oil prices higher, providing a fresh surge of revenue for the Kremlin.
- War Funding: This financial windfall is directly fueling Russia’s continued military operations in Ukraine, effectively linking the two theaters of war.
