Tragic Lynching of Hindu Laborer Sparks International Outcry

A 25-year-old Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, was brutally murdered by a mob in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The incident occurred during a period of national volatility following the assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent radical leader.

The Incident: From Dispute to Deathtrap

The tragedy reportedly began with a workplace disagreement. According to author Taslima Nasreen, a Muslim coworker at a factory in Bhaluka accused Das of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet after a trivial argument.

This accusation quickly incited a local mob. While video footage shows Das barefoot and in police custody shortly before his death—suggesting he was initially “rescued”—the protection failed. Whether the police were overpowered by militants or complicit in releasing him remains a subject of intense public debate. Das was ultimately beaten to death, hanged from a tree, and his body was set on fire.

Voices for Justice

  • Taslima Nasreen (Exiled Author): Nasreen, a vocal critic of fundamentalism, highlighted the extreme poverty of the Das family. She noted that Dipu was the sole provider for his disabled father, mother, wife, and child. She lamented that the poorest citizens have “no support, no country, and no protection,” as they lack the means to flee to safety.
  • Shashi Tharoor (Indian MP): Tharoor described the event as an “unbearably tragic” symptom of “mob rule.” While he acknowledged the Bangladeshi government’s condemnation of the act, he demanded transparency regarding the punishment of the killers and the steps being taken to prevent future recurrences.

Current Legal Status

Following the outcry, the Bangladeshi government has taken the following actions:

  • Arrests: On December 20, 2025, the Chief Advisor confirmed that the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested seven suspects.
  • Security: Police have since recovered the body and claim to have brought the local situation under control.

The Aftermath

The case underscores a harrowing reality for minorities and the working class in Bangladesh. As Nasreen pointed out, the “mad murderers” have not only taken a life but have destroyed the survival of an entire dependent family, leaving them vulnerable to further trauma without a breadwinner.
