A rally held in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, January 17, 2026, ended in chaos as Jake Lang, a prominent conservative influencer, was forced to flee from a large crowd of counter-protesters. The confrontation is the latest flashpoint in the ongoing unrest surrounding “Operation Metro Surge,” a massive federal immigration enforcement initiative.

Lang, a January 6 defendant who received a presidential pardon, had organized a “March Against Minnesota Fraud” to show support for federal ICE agents. However, his event was quickly overwhelmed by hundreds of counter-protesters who gathered near City Hall to oppose the recent immigration crackdown.
- The Escalation: The atmosphere turned hostile as counter-protesters drowned out the rally with chants. The verbal spat escalated into a physical pursuit; video footage captured Lang being chased through downtown streets, eventually appearing with visible head injuries before escaping the area.
- The Spark: Tensions were pre-fueled by Lang’s social media posts, in which he threatened to burn a Quran on the steps of City Hall. This rhetoric drew a massive response from local community groups and activists.
- Law Enforcement Presence: Despite the presence of the Minnesota National Guard nearby, they remained “staged” and did not intervene in the specific skirmish between the two groups.
A City Under Siege
- Federal vs. Local: Over 2,000 federal officers are currently deployed in the region. This has created a “city under siege” atmosphere, leading to daily protests against federal overreach.
- The Renee Good Shooting: Much of the public anger stems from the January 7 killing of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen shot by an ICE officer. Her death has become a rallying cry for those demanding the withdrawal of federal forces.
- Constitutional Crisis: Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey remain locked in a legal battle with the federal government. Both leaders are under investigation for allegedly attempting to block federal agents, a move they argue is necessary to protect their citizens’ safety and civil rights.
