1,500 Beagles Rescued

The tide has officially turned for the dogs at Ridglan Farms. Following months of intense pressure and a massive activist demonstration in April, a major rescue operation is now underway to save 1,500 beagles from the Wisconsin research breeding facility.

While the “storming” of the facility made headlines, the actual release was secured through a negotiated purchase by Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy.

The Rescue Roadmap

  • The Exit Plan: The first wave of 300 dogs left the facility on May 1. The remaining 1,200 are being transported via a massive logistics network of planes and vans to shelters nationwide.
  • A Long Road to Recovery: These beagles have spent their lives in cages and have never experienced grass, toys, or human affection. They are currently undergoing veterinary checkups and socialization to prepare them for life as pets.
  • High Demand: While thousands of people have already applied to adopt, rescue groups are prioritizing experienced fosters who can help these dogs navigate their new world.

Why This is Happening Now

The rescue follows a chaotic April where nearly 1,000 protesters clashed with law enforcement at the facility. However, the legal groundwork was laid earlier:

  • License Surrender: Ridglan Farms is legally required to cease operations by July 1, 2026, after a settlement involving allegations of animal cruelty and surgeries performed without proper anesthesia.
  • Closing the Doors: The facility is winding down for good. Approximately 500 dogs still remain on-site, and negotiations are ongoing to ensure every single one is released before the July deadline.

The Big Picture: This marks one of the largest laboratory dog rescues in history, signaling a massive shift in the legal and public standing of research breeding facilities.
