TSA agents and union members at Portland International Airport (PDX) held a public demonstration demanding an end to the federal funding stalemate. - Economic Hardship: Many agents are now relying on community-funded food pantries established within the airport to support their families.
- Operational Risk: The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) warns that prolonged non-payment is driving higher resignation rates, which could soon lead to longer security lines and compromised safety protocols.
- Staffing Shortages: With no clear end in sight, the “call-out” rate has increased significantly as employees struggle to cover commuting costs and childcare.
Why Is This Happening?
While the majority of the federal government is currently funded, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) remains caught in a legislative deadlock. Negotiations in Washington have stalled over specific immigration and enforcement reforms, leaving roughly 240,000 DHS employees nationwide working without compensation.
