Mamdani’s $700 Knicks Playoff Ticket Sparks Debate Amid Ticket Affordability Campaign

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s recent attendance at Madison Square Garden has drawn scrutiny following reports that his ticket cost around $700. Mamdani attended Game 2 of the Knicks’ Eastern Conference playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, later posting a photo from the stands alongside Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

The sighting has raised questions due to the contrast with Mamdani’s public platform. Just a month earlier, the mayor criticized soaring ticket prices, calling sports a “luxury commodity” and demanding that owners do more to keep games accessible to everyday fans. The $700 seat also marks a shift from his late-2025 mayoral campaign, during which he deliberately sat in the upper tiers of the arena to project a populist image.

While the ticket price has drawn criticism, Mamdani’s administration continues to push for sports affordability. He recently announced a partnership with FIFA to secure 1,000 discounted $50 tickets for New York City residents ahead of the 2026 World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium.
