The document was previously held under seal within the legal records of Nicholas Tartaglione, Epstein’s former cellmate. The release follows a successful legal petition by The New York Times.

Notable Contents

Written on yellow lined paper, the note was reportedly found by Tartaglione inside a graphic novel in July 2019. The text reflects a tone of defiance:

  • On the Investigation: “They investigated me for months — FOUND NOTHING!!!”
  • On Control: “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.”
  • On Emotion: “Watcha want me to do — Bust out cryin!!”
  • Conclusion: The note ends with the underlined phrases “NO FUN” and “NOT WORTH IT!!”

Background and Skepticism

Despite its release, the note’s history and validity remain subjects of debate:

  • Verification: The Department of Justice has not officially authenticated the handwriting. While Tartaglione’s legal team claims it is genuine, they have not provided the specifics of their authentication process.
  • The Source: Tartaglione, an ex-police officer convicted of quadruple murder, claims he discovered the note after Epstein’s initial suicide attempt on July 23, 2019.
  • Official Position: Federal prosecutors cited “strong public interest” as the reason for not opposing the unsealing, though the DOJ noted they were unaware of the document’s existence until it emerged in this specific court case.

This document is separate from the materials found in Epstein’s cell following his death on August 10, 2019, which investigators previously characterized as complaints regarding prison conditions rather than a final statement.
