Canada Cracks Down on Extortion Gangs Targeting South Asian Community

Canadian authorities have taken major action against transnational criminal gangs, deporting three foreign nationals linked to a surge in violent extortion rackets targeting Indian-owned businesses and homes across the country.

The deportations are the result of collaborative work by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the specialized British Columbia Extortion Task Force.

Key Enforcement Details

  • 3 Foreign Nationals Deported: The CBSA has removed three individuals accused of operating an extortion racket.
  • 78 Others Under Investigation: Immigration investigations have been launched into an additional 78 foreign nationals for suspected links to these criminal networks and potential inadmissibility to Canada.
  • Extortion Task Force: The 40-member multi-agency task force was established in response to the growing trend of threats, shootings, and violence, particularly in the Lower Mainland.

The Nature of the Attacks

Extortion attempts, often accompanied by shootings outside businesses and residences, have spiked in recent months. High-profile targets include popular comedian Kapil Sharma’s Cafe 2727 restaurant.

These crimes have disproportionately targeted members of the South Asian business community in areas with large Indian diaspora populations, such as Brampton in Ontario and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Transnational Organized Crime Link

Officials note that despite Canada designating the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a “foreign terrorist organisation,” its criminal activities, along with those of the Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara gangs, continue to rise.

This gang has been linked to extreme violence, including the fatal shooting of Indian-origin businessman Darshan Singh Sasi in Abbotsford, B.C., for which the Lawrence Bishnoi gang later claimed responsibility.

The recent deportations underscore the government’s commitment to using all legal means to disrupt transnational organized crime and restore safety for the targeted communities.
