The hunt for the perfect Instagram shot has pushed local officials to a breaking point. As the summer travel season kicks off, Monterey County is advancing a one-year temporary parking ban at Bixby Bridge—one of the most heavily photographed landmarks on Highway 1—to combat chaotic tourist behavior and extreme traffic hazards.

The Chaos by the Numbers
Recent traffic data reveals how social media tourism has created a logistical nightmare on the narrow, two-lane coastal highway:
- Pedestrian Surges: Up to 325 people per hour dodge traffic to cross the highway on foot for better photo angles.
- Dead Gridlock: Roughly 70 vehicles per hour stop dead in active traffic lanes to drop off passengers or snap quick photos.
- Emergency Risks: Local officials reported that recent Spring Break traffic completely overwhelmed the area, raising serious concerns that emergency vehicles wouldn’t be able to get through.
What is Changing?
The Monterey County Board of Supervisors has directed staff to draft the official parking moratorium.
While authorities originally hoped to have the ban active for Memorial Day weekend, implementation is slightly delayed. Because the bridge sits on a major state route and protected coastline, the county must first finalize permits with Caltrans and the California Coastal Commission, as well as coordinate with law enforcement.
Once the ordinance passes its final rounds, the dirt turnouts directly flanking the 94-year-old concrete arch bridge will be strictly off-limits for parking.
