The Donald Trump administration has made a significant policy shift by deciding to provide Ukraine with intelligence for long-range missile strikes deep inside Russia. This is reportedly the first time the US has offered such assistance, signaling President Trump’s increasing frustration with Moscow over stalled peace talks.

The primary objective of this intelligence sharing is to enable Ukraine to more easily target Russia’s war-sustaining energy infrastructure, such as refineries, pipelines, and power plants—Russia’s single-most important source of revenue.

Key Details:

  • Intelligence Approved: US officials confirmed President Trump authorized intelligence agencies and the Pentagon to aid Ukraine in conducting these long-range strikes.
  • Tomahawk Request: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested the supply of US Tomahawk missiles (with a range of up to 2,500km) during a meeting with Trump at the UN General Assembly. The Tomahawks would place Moscow and much of western Russia within striking distance.
  • Decision Pending: The US has not yet made a final decision on providing the Tomahawk missiles, though Vice President J.D. Vance has confirmed the request is under consideration.
  • Wider Western Support: The US has also urged NATO allies to provide similar intelligence and military support to Kyiv.
  • Russian Warning: Russia reacted strongly, stating it would “act appropriately” if Tomahawk missiles were transferred to Ukraine.

The move marks a notable escalation and shift in the US approach to the conflict, occurring as the war nears its fourth anniversary. Concurrently, President Trump has ramped up economic pressure on countries purchasing Russian oil, imposing a 50% tariff on Indian goods in a bid to weaken the Kremlin’s finances.
