A community in Northern Quebec is mourning the loss of Alacie Iqaluk, a six-year-old girl who passed away on December 31, 2025, ten days after being caught in the crossfire of a police-involved shooting in Inukjuak.

On the morning of December 20, the Nunavik Police Service (NPS) responded to a high-risk call involving an armed individual. The situation quickly escalated into a shootout between officers and a 35-year-old man, later identified as the girl’s father.
- The Victim: Alacie was inside the residence, reportedly in bed with her mother, when the gunfire began.
- The Injury: She sustained a critical head wound during the exchange of shots.
- Medical Care: After being medevaced to a Montreal hospital and fighting for her life for over a week, she succumbed to her injuries.
Current Investigations
Because the death involved police action, two separate provincial agencies are now scrutinizing the event:
- The BEI (Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes): Quebec’s police watchdog is investigating whether the bullet that struck the child was fired by an officer or the suspect.
- The Sûreté du Québec (SQ): The provincial police are managing the criminal investigation into the suspect’s actions prior to the shooting.
A Community in Crisis
The death of Alacie Iqaluk has intensified long-standing concerns regarding policing and safety in Nunavik. This tragedy marks the 16th fatality resulting from police interactions in the region since 2016.
Regional leaders, including those from the Kativik Regional Government, have expressed profound grief, calling the young girl an “innocent victim” of a devastating situation. The suspect currently faces several charges, including the illegal possession of a firearm.
