Singapore tech giant Sea Limited (the force behind Shopee and Garena) is officially pivoting to an “AI-native” operating model. Backed by Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), Sea has established a dedicated AI Centre of Excellence (AI CoE) to build out its own proprietary tech stack, aim for massive operational efficiencies, and curb third-party infrastructure costs.

- The “Compass Max” Powerhouse: Rather than relying on standard external tech, Sea is deploying Compass Max v3.5—its proprietary, 245-billion-parameter LLM. It is specifically optimized for Southeast Asian linguistic nuances and e-commerce contexts.
- Immediate ROI on Shopee: The model is already live across Shopee’s platform, driving customer service, search features, and merchant tools. According to Sea, running its own model costs a fraction of what leading commercial alternatives charge.
- The 100-Strong Talent Hunt: Over the next three years, the AI CoE will inject at least 100 high-level R&D roles into Singapore’s ecosystem, hunting for top-tier machine learning engineers, data scientists, and AI architects.
- Ecosystem Expansion: Beyond retail, this core AI tech is slated to scale operations across Sea’s digital financial services arm (recently rebranded as Monee).
The Big Picture: Singapore’s AI Gold Rush
Sea’s aggressive pivot lands amidst an unprecedented AI boom in Singapore. The move ensures a homegrown champion stays competitive against massive inflows of foreign tech capital—including OpenAI’s recent $300M+ infrastructure commitment and Google’s heavy push into local agentic AI capabilities.
