Putin Warns Europe Russia is "Ready for War" Amid Intensifying Peace Diplomacy

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued one of his sharpest warnings to date on Tuesday, declaring that Russia is “ready right away” if European countries “suddenly want to wage a war with us and start it.”

The threat was made at an investment forum in Moscow and came just before Putin met with a visiting US delegation, including envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner, for talks focused on revising the Trump administration’s Ukraine peace plan. The timing marks a significant escalation amidst intensifying diplomatic negotiations involving Washington, Kyiv, and European capitals.

Moscow Accuses Europe of Sabotage

Despite his aggressive warning, Putin repeated that Russia has no intention of attacking European nations, framing his statement as one of deterrence and readiness.

However, he sharply criticized European governments, accusing them of obstructing US-led diplomacy and sabotaging revisions to the Trump-era peace framework.

“They don’t have a peace agenda, they’re on the side of the war,” Putin stated. He claimed that Europeans inserted “demands that are absolutely unacceptable to Russia” into negotiation drafts, stalling progress while attempting to shift the blame onto Moscow.

European governments have long voiced concerns that Moscow’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine, citing repeated Russian drone incursions, airspace violations, and suspected sabotage operations across the continent since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

US Delegation Arrives to Refine Peace Plan

The US delegation’s visit signals the Trump administration’s push to refine its peace plan, which Kyiv and various European capitals initially criticized for being too favorable to Russian interests.

  • Recent Progress: On Sunday, US and Ukrainian officials met in Florida and narrowed the original 28-point proposal down to 20. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the discussions as productive but acknowledged “there’s more work to be done.”
  • Ukrainian Stance: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the revised framework builds upon a document previously drafted in Geneva, calling it “finalized.”
  • European Frustration: European leaders have been vocal about their frustration at being largely sidelined by Washington in the initial drafting of the US-Russia peace outline, even though they are expected to fund and guarantee any settlement. Ukrainian diplomats are now working to ensure their European partners are “substantially involved” in all subsequent decisions.
