Toronto, ON — Starting today, January 19, 2026, parents across Toronto have a new way to resolve school disputes. As part of a provincial push for more accountability, the TDSB and TCDSB have officially opened Student and Family Support Offices.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! These offices act as a formal bridge between families and school board leadership when standard conversations with principals hit a dead end.
What You Need to Know
- Faster Response Times: The offices are mandated to acknowledge your inquiry within 48 hours and aim for a resolution within 5 business days.
- The “Final Word”: These centers are led by a Supervisory Officer, providing a level of authority higher than a school principal.
- Who it’s for: Families struggling with special education placements, unresolved safety issues, or complex policy disputes.
The New “Step-by-Step” for Parents
- Talk to the Teacher (Classroom level)
- Talk to the Principal (School level)
- Contact the Support Office (Board level)
Why is this happening now?
The move comes under Bill 33, which focuses on boards currently under provincial supervision. The goal is to move away from “closed-door” board politics and give parents a direct, transparent line to decision-makers. While some see this as a win for transparency, others worry it reduces the influence of local school trustees.
Quick Tip: If you have an ongoing issue that hasn’t been solved by your principal, you can now find the “Request for Assistance” forms on your school board’s homepage under the Family Support tab.
