JFA Finalizes Michihisa Kano as Nadeshiko Japan Head Coach

From Interim to Permanent

Kano stepped in as caretaker following the unexpected departure of Nils Nielsen in March. Despite the sudden transition, Kano’s performance during the team’s April friendly tour—highlighted by a victory over the United States—convinced the JFA that he was the right choice to lead the program long-term.

A Proven Track Record

Kano is no stranger to success within the Japanese developmental system:

  • U-20 Success: He led Japan’s U-20 squad to the finals of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
  • Gold Medalist: He coached the side that secured gold at the 2023 Asian Games.

The Road Ahead

Kano inherits a team coming off a recent Women’s Asian Cup title but facing a shift in philosophy. While his predecessor was noted for a more relaxed approach, Kano has pledged to instill a brand of football defined by high-intensity aggression and physical toughness.

His primary mission is clear: restore Japan’s status as a global powerhouse in time for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Fans can see Kano’s official debut on the sidelines this June during a friendly against South Africa in Osaka.
