WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI — In the wake of a violent assault on Temple Israel, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a searing condemnation on Friday, labeling the incident an unmistakable act of antisemitism. The attack, which occurred on March 12, 2026, saw a suspect crash a vehicle loaded with explosives and gasoline into one of the nation’s largest Reform synagogues.

The incident unfolded during the noon hour while approximately 140 children were attending the synagogue’s early childhood center. The suspect, 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, breached the building’s entrance with a truck, triggering a fire that filled the hallways with smoke.
Despite the presence of a rifle and commercial-grade fireworks in the vehicle, no children or staff members were physically harmed. Governor Whitmer credited the “heroic” actions of the private security team and the facility’s recent FBI-led active shooter training for preventing a mass casualty event.
“Not a Political Debate”
Speaking from a press conference the following day, Governor Whitmer pushed back against attempts to complicate the motive behind the violence.
“Yesterday’s attack was antisemitism. It was hate, plain and simple,” Whitmer stated. “This is not a political moment. This is not a political debate. This is targeting babies who are Jewish. That’s antisemitism at its absolute worst.”
Investigation and Context
The FBI is currently investigating the attack as a targeted hate crime. While the suspect died of a self-inflicted wound at the scene, investigators are looking into his background. Early reports suggest Ghazali may have been motivated by personal loss related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, though officials emphasize that such grievances do not justify domestic terrorism.
Key Facts of the Case:
- Suspect: Ayman Mohamad Ghazali (Deceased).
- Injuries: One security guard hospitalized; 30 first responders treated for smoke inhalation.
- Security: The synagogue had completed emergency response training just two months prior.
Global Impact
The attack has sparked a massive increase in security patrols at religious institutions across Michigan. Leaders from various faiths have joined Governor Whitmer in calling for unity, even as international tensions continue to spill over into local communities.
