Ukrainian defense forces reported a coordinated “spring offensive” consisting of nearly 1,000 drones launched within a 24-hour window:
- The Initial Wave: 392 drones and 34 missiles were launched overnight.
- The Daylight Wave: An additional 550 drones targeted cities like Kyiv and Lviv during the Tuesday workday, aiming to maximize psychological impact and civilian disruption.
- Defense Performance: While Ukrainian air defenses neutralized over 900 of the incoming threats, the sheer volume of the “swarm” overwhelmed local systems in several regions.
Human and Cultural Toll
The strikes resulted in at least 8 confirmed deaths and over 70 injuries. The casualties highlight the indiscriminate nature of the targets:
- Ivano-Frankivsk: A maternity hospital and residential apartments were hit, claiming the lives of a National Guard soldier and his teenage daughter.
- Lviv: Drones struck a residential building in the city’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, causing structural damage near the 17th-century St. Andrew’s Church.
- Infrastructure: Significant damage to the power grid caused blackouts in Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and Poltava, with secondary outages reported as far as Moldova.
