In a significant update to one of California’s most notorious cold cases, investigators have identified soil evidence suggesting human remains were previously—or are currently—located at the property of Susan Flores, the mother of convicted murderer Paul Flores.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!During a briefing on Friday, May 8, 2026, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson announced that specialized soil vapor testing and ground-penetrating radar at the Arroyo Grande residence yielded results consistent with human decomposition.
Critical Updates from the Investigation
- Detection of Decomposition: Experts utilized soil vapor analysis to identify organic compounds typically released by a decomposing body. Sheriff Parkinson noted that the data strongly indicates human remains were once present at the site.
- The Search Area: The operation, which launched on May 6, 2026, targeted both the front and back yards of the home, as well as an adjacent property. This marks the most intensive search of this specific location in over two decades.
- Next Steps: Although the chemical signatures are present, Kristin Smart’s remains have not yet been physically recovered. Teams are currently analyzing “anomalies” detected by radar, which may lead to the removal of concrete structures or further excavation.
Case Context
Paul Flores was found guilty in 2022 for the 1996 murder of Kristin Smart, despite the fact that her body was never found. While previous evidence suggested she was buried at his father’s property before being moved, these new findings suggest a different or additional concealment site.
The Sheriff’s Department has stated they will remain on-site until they have either recovered the remains or exhausted all forensic leads.
