The Internal Revenue Service today announced a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report available through IRS Individual Online Account.

Taxpayers can securely obtain and download the report when applying for a job, a loan, a government benefit, or another service that requires tax compliance information.

Financial institutions, government agencies, and other organizations that receive the report can use its built-in digital certificate to confirm its authenticity. The certificate also helps protect taxpayer information and maintains the integrity of the report.

“By providing a secure, digitally authenticated report, the IRS is making it easier for taxpayers to access and share important information while protecting privacy and data integrity,” said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano.

Key benefits

  • Authenticated and secure: Each Tax Compliance Report includes an IRS-issued digital certificate that confirms its authenticity.
  • Built-in verification: Verification features are embedded directly in the downloadable file.
  • On-demand access: Taxpayers can access and download their report at any time through their IRS Individual Online Account.
  • Standardized assurance: Each report includes the same authentication and verification features.
1. How does the Tax Compliance Report differ from a standard tax transcript?

Unlike a traditional tax transcript, which discloses sensitive details like your gross income, filing status, and dependents, the Tax Compliance Report strictly reports your tax compliance standing. It also includes an embedded IRS digital certificate to prove authenticity and covers a broader historical window for filing and payment history.

2. How do third parties verify that my report is authentic?

The PDF file contains a built-in IRS digital cryptographic signature. When the receiving lender, employer, or agency opens the original downloaded file (ideally using a desktop PDF viewer like Adobe Reader), the software reads the embedded certificate to confirm it was issued directly by the IRS and has not been edited.

3. Can I print out the report or send a screenshot to a lender?

No. Printing, scanning, taking screenshots, or using a “Print to PDF” function strips the embedded digital certificate from the document. To preserve its authenticated status, you must share the original, unedited PDF file downloaded directly from your IRS account.

4. Where can I download my Tax Compliance Report?

Log into your IRS Individual Online Account (or Business Tax Account for corporate entities), go to the Records and status tab, and select Tax records. From there, you can generate and save your report (Letter 6201 for individuals/sole proprietors or Letter 6574 for businesses) on demand 24/7.

5. What happens if I recently made a payment or filed a return, but my report shows “Noncompliant”?

The report reflects data processed as of the generation date. The IRS notes that it typically takes approximately 2 weeks for recent payments to post and 4 to 6 weeks for newly submitted returns to update across IRS system records.
