The vessel, identified as the Aqua 1, was navigating approximately 17 nautical miles north of Ras Laffan when it was targeted. According to the Qatari Ministry of Defense, three missiles were launched toward the area:
- Two Interceptions: Qatari air defense systems successfully neutralized two incoming projectiles.
- One Impact: The third missile struck the port side of the Aqua 1 above the waterline.
While the impact caused a localized fire, emergency teams extinguished the flames quickly. Experts also discovered a second, unexploded projectile lodged in the vessel’s engine room, which is currently being assessed by specialized units.
Impact on Global Energy
The strike on the Aqua 1 is the latest in a series of escalations threatening the stability of the Strait of Hormuz. This specific incident follows previous attacks on Ras Laffan Industrial City, which have already disrupted nearly 17% of Qatar’s LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) export capacity.
As a primary supplier to Europe and Asia, any prolonged threat to Qatari infrastructure poses a significant risk to global energy prices and supply chains.
Geopolitical Escalation
The incident coincided with a major policy shift from Tehran. Earlier today, Iranian officials declared new “rules of passage” for the Strait of Hormuz, signaling an end to the previous maritime status quo and asserting stricter Iranian control over the vital waterway.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation as Qatar coordinates with regional allies to bolster maritime security and prevent further disruptions to global trade.
