Calgary Water Crisis: The "Red Zone" Update

Calgary is back under emergency water restrictions following a major break in the Bearspaw South Feeder Main. With storage levels dropping to critical lows, City Hall is calling for an immediate “all hands on deck” approach to conservation to prevent the taps from running dry.

The “Short & Simple” for Residents

To keep the city’s reservoirs from hitting zero, every drop counts. Officials are asking for the following:

  • The 3-Minute Challenge: Keep showers under three minutes.
  • The “Full Load” Rule: Don’t run the dishwasher or laundry until they are completely full.
  • Skip the Flush: Only flush the toilet when absolutely necessary.
  • Total Outdoor Ban: No outdoor water use of any kind (Stage 4 restrictions).

Why Is This Happening Again?

This latest rupture occurred on December 30, 2025, in northwest Calgary. Because this is a primary “feeder” pipe, the rest of the network is struggling to keep up with demand. Mayor Farkas has noted that this 1975-era infrastructure has simply reached its limit, and plans are now being rushed to build a secondary backup line this year.
