On the afternoon of January 1, a man entered an A&W on Portage Avenue and threatened to shoot staff unless they emptied the registers. However, when the employees fled and he couldn’t crack the till, his priorities shifted.
Instead of leaving empty-handed, he raided the kitchen, swiping burgers and fries directly from the pans.
The Getaway
His escape plan was far from subtle:
- The Transit Tactic: He boarded a Winnipeg Transit bus while carrying the stolen food.
- Dining in Transit: While the bus moved through the city, the man sat and ate his hot meal.
- Public Disturbance: Witnesses reported that while eating, he began attempting to pick fights with fellow passengers.
The Takedown
The meal was cut short when police, including the Tactical Support Team, intercepted the bus. Officers arrested 29-year-old Jonathan Fontaine on the spot. In addition to the stolen meal, he was allegedly found with a stolen wallet.
The Fallout: Fontaine is now facing charges of Robbery and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. He is currently being held in custody.
