Dr. Gover was a highly regarded educator who held positions at both Camosun College and Vancouver Island University. Friends and colleagues describe her as:
- A passionate researcher focused on organizational behavior.
- A devoted mother to her two young daughters, ages 7 and 11.
- A courageous woman who had been taking active steps to ensure her safety during a difficult separation.
Legal Status and Charges
The B.C. Prosecution Service has officially charged Gover’s ex-husband, Muhammed Ali Basar, with second-degree murder.
The case is being handled as an intimate partner violence file. Records show that Gover had been navigating a high-risk situation; Basar was reportedly meant to appear in court on the day of the homicide for allegedly violating a previous court order.
A Community Response to Tragedy
In the wake of her death, the community has rallied to support her surviving children:
- Fundraising: A GoFundMe page has raised over $110,000 to be placed in a trust for her daughters.
- Institutional Support: Camosun College has implemented grief counseling services for students and staff impacted by the loss of their colleague.
- Advocacy: Several local women’s organizations are now calling for a systemic review, questioning how a tragedy occurred despite Gover having active protection orders and security measures in place.
