The Incident and Emergency Response

The attack occurred at approximately 5:12 p.m. on Upper Sandy Cove Road. According to police, Drew was cycling past a residence when he was set upon by three large dogs—identified as two Cane Corsos and one Rottweiler.

Emergency responders arrived to find the teenager with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a Halifax hospital via LifeFlight but passed away shortly after. The three dogs involved were seized and have since been euthanized.

Focus of the Investigation

RCMP spokesperson Staff Sgt. Mark Macpherson described the scene as “extremely distressing” and confirmed that the investigation remains active. Key areas of focus include:

  • Containment: Investigators are working to determine how the dogs were able to leave the property.
  • Behavioral History: Officers are canvassing the neighborhood to establish if there were prior complaints or documented instances of aggression involving these specific animals.
  • Video Evidence: Police are reviewing local surveillance footage to piece together the timeline of the encounter.
  • Potential Charges: While the dog owners are cooperating fully, the RCMP stated it is too early to determine if criminal charges will be laid.

A Community in Mourning

The death has deeply affected the South Shore community. Drew was a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School, where grief counselors have been made available to students and staff.

Local support for Drew’s family has been swift and significant. A GoFundMe page and community-led initiatives, including donations from the local fishing industry, have raised significant funds to assist his mother during this time.

Information Request: Anyone who witnessed the event or has information regarding the history of the dogs is urged to contact the Shelburne District RCMP at 902-875-2490.
