Harman Bhangu Signals "Likely" Run for B.C. Conservative Leadership

Langley-Abbotsford MLA Harman Bhangu has moved one step closer to entering the race to lead the B.C. Conservative Party. Following weeks of speculation, the freshman MLA confirmed on December 30, 2025, that he is “most likely” to seek the position left vacant by former leader John Rustad.

Why the Announcement is Happening Now

Bhangu’s decision was largely contingent on the plans of federal MP Aaron Gunn. Bhangu had previously stated he would not run against Gunn due to their close friendship. On December 24, Gunn officially declined a provincial run, clearing the path for Bhangu to step forward.

Core Campaign Pillars

If he officially enters the race, Bhangu has signaled he will focus on:

  • Economic Relief: Prioritizing the “kitchen table issues” like the cost of living and housing.
  • The “Entrepreneurial Spirit”: Cutting red tape to foster business growth in the province.
  • Healthcare Reform: Addressing the current crisis within the provincial system.
  • Populist Appeal: Leveraging his background as a former trucker to connect with working-class voters.

The Road Ahead

While Bhangu is clearly leaning toward a “yes,” he is waiting for the official leadership rules to be released by the party in mid-January. He has emphasized the need for a “transparent and fair” process before he makes his final commitment.

“The province is at a crossroads. We need a leader who understands the struggles of the average British Columbian, and I believe I have the energy and the network to take this party to the next level.” — Harman Bhangu

Current State of the Race

With the B.C. Conservatives currently under interim leader Trevor Halford, the field of potential candidates is narrowing. While several prominent names have ruled themselves out, Bhangu is currently viewed as a frontrunner due to his strong fundraising capabilities and his success in the 2024 election.
