Indian Student Shot Dead Near University of Toronto Campus; Manhunt Underway

The Incident

Police discovered Avasthi suffering from a gunshot wound in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area. Despite the arrival of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspects fled the area before officers arrived, leading to a brief lockdown of the UTSC campus.

Community in Mourning

Shivank Avasthi was a prominent member of the campus community:

  • Academic Life: Identified as a third-year Life Sciences student (and noted by the Consulate as a doctoral student).
  • Athletics: A dedicated member of the UTSC Maroon Cheer team. In an emotional Instagram tribute, his teammates described him as a “beloved Maroon” who was known for his ability to lift spirits and bring smiles to those around him.

Outrage Over Campus Safety

The tragedy has ignited a wave of “fear and anger” among the student body. In public forums like Reddit, students have criticized the university for:

  • Security Gaps: Students claim they have repeatedly flagged the “campus valley” area as a safety risk.
  • Lack of Communication: Many feel the information regarding the suspect’s description and motive has been insufficient, leaving those with late-night classes or exams feeling vulnerable.

Diplomatic and Official Response

The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed “deep anguish” over the loss. Officials confirmed they are in contact with Avasthi’s family to provide all necessary assistance and are coordinating closely with Canadian law enforcement.

A Pattern of Violence

This killing marks Toronto’s 41st homicide of the year. It follows closely on the heels of another tragedy involving an Indian national; 30-year-old Himanshi Khurana was recently murdered in what police describe as a case of intimate partner violence. A search is currently underway for suspect Abdul Ghafoori in that case.
