Donald Trump has publicly stated that it would be an “insult” to the United States if he didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize this year. However, experts in Oslo, where the award is based, believe he has virtually no chance. Critics argue that his “America First” policies and divisive style run contrary to the prize’s ideals, particularly its focus on multilateral cooperation. A historian outright called the possibility “completely unthinkable.”

Trump claims to have resolved “six or seven wars in as many months,” a figure experts find grossly exaggerated. The Nobel Committee is expected to prioritize concrete success in peacemaking efforts.

The Focus Shifts to Unsung Heroes

Instead of high-profile political leaders, many observers predict the prestigious award, announced on Friday, October 10, may shine a light on lesser-known individuals and organizations working on forgotten conflicts.

Top predicted candidates and themes include:

  • Local Mediators and Peace Builders in regions like Sudan, the Sahel, and the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea).
  • Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms, a network of volunteers providing life-saving aid amid war and famine.
  • Media Watchdogs like the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, given the deadly year for reporters, especially in Gaza.
  • Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition critic Alexei Navalny, who is currently among the bookmakers’ favourites.

This year, 338 individuals and organizations were nominated, with the winner chosen by the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Other Nobel Announcements

The Nobel season begins next week with daily announcements leading up to the Peace Prize:

  • Monday: Medicine
  • Tuesday: Physics
  • Wednesday: Chemistry
  • Thursday, October 9: Literature
  • Friday, October 10: Peace

Literature Prize Prediction: The Literature prize, set for Thursday, October 9, is generating intense speculation. Switzerland’s Christian Kracht, considered a major contemporary German-language author, is a favourite. One Swedish culture critic suggests the Academy’s recent attention to Kracht could be “a sure sign” of a win, predicting the prize will go to a white male author from the Anglo-Saxon, German, or French-language world this year.
