Huntsville, TX — Barring a last-minute intervention from the U.S. Supreme Court, 55-year-old Charles Victor Thompson is scheduled to receive a lethal injection today for a double murder committed nearly 28 years ago.

The case dates back to April 1998 in Tomball, Texas. Prosecutors argued that Thompson, fueled by jealousy, broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend, Dennise Hayslip, and shot her and her new boyfriend, Darren Cain.
- Cain was killed instantly.
- Hayslip survived the initial shooting but died in the hospital one week later.
The “Medical Malpractice” Defense

His attorneys argue that while he shot her, her death was the result of a botched intubation by hospital staff that deprived her of oxygen. They contend that medical negligence, not the bullet wound, was the proximate cause of death—a claim Texas courts have repeatedly rejected.
The Infamous 2005 Escape
Thompson gained national notoriety in 2005 when he successfully escaped from the Harris County Jail.
- The Ruse: Wearing civilian clothes he had smuggled in, Thompson used a forged ID badge to convince a deputy he was a representative from the Attorney General’s office.
- The Exit: He literally walked out the front door of the jail.
- The Capture: His freedom lasted only 72 hours; he was apprehended outside a liquor store in Shreveport, Louisiana, while using a payphone.
Current Status
Earlier this week, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted unanimously against recommending clemency or a reprieve. If the execution proceeds as planned at 6:00 PM, Thompson will be the first inmate executed in the United States in 2026.
