Escalating Chaos

Witnesses described a rapid succession of attacks that gave them little time to find safety. Ghayath Itani told the BBC that after a residential building was hit, three subsequent strikes targeted a warehouse, sending shrapnel and metal debris tearing through nearby homes and businesses. Itani, whose own shop was “destroyed to the ground,” noted that many residents were trapped in their apartments because the strikes rendered elevators and stairwells unusable.

The Toll on the Displaced

The human cost was most evident in a flat housing families who had already fled violence elsewhere. Tarek Ismail recounted the moment he rushed to the scene to find his injured brother.

“There was a massacre down there because the flat was crowded with displaced people and children,” Ismail said.

No Safe Haven

For those caught in the blasts, the experience was one of pure survival. Souheil Hamad described the terror of the building shaking as glass shattered over him. He emerged to find the streets filled with smoke, fire, and casualties.

Hamad voiced a growing sentiment among the city’s population: that nowhere is safe anymore. “The civilians are getting hit,” he told reporters. “No security at all.”
