Violent Protests Erupt in Michoacán After Anti-Crime Mayor's Murder

Violent protests have rocked the Mexican state of Michoacán following the weekend murder of an outspoken anti-crime mayor, Carlos Manzo of Uruapan. The demonstrations, which began on Sunday under the slogan “enough of abuses and omissions,” escalated quickly, resulting in the storming of the Government Palace in the capital, Morelia, and the burning of City Hall in Apatzingán.

The Murders that Fueled the Rage

The immediate trigger for the protests was the killing of Mayor Manzo on Saturday during a Day of the Dead celebration. Authorities suspect the crime was planned by an organized crime group. Manzo, known for his tough-on-crime platform and his viral social media videos criticizing criminals and federal security efforts, was a popular local figure.

Adding to the outrage was the recent murder of Bernardo Bravo Manríquez, the head of a local citrus growers association in Apatzingán. Bravo was found dead in October, shortly after he had publicly demanded tighter security for agriculture workers who face constant extortion and bribes from drug trafficking groups.

Analysts point out that these back-to-back killings of figures from different sectors highlight how violence has permeated every part of Michoacán life.

Citizen Response and Government Plan

The protests represent an “organic and honest” reaction from Michoacán citizens who are “fed up” with years of extreme insecurity and high violence, according to David Mora of the International Crisis Group. Demonstrators specifically referenced both Manzo and Bravo, protesting the common violence that forces many to abandon their homes and creates “ghost towns” in rural areas.

In response, President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the “cowardly murder” of Manzo and addressed the issue by presenting a “plan for peace and justice” in Michoacán. The plan focuses on:

  • Addressing the roots of crime through investments in education and living wages for farm workers.
  • Strengthening the presence of federal forces in the state.

However, analysts like Mora remain skeptical, noting that the emphasis on sending more troops mirrors strategies used in other violent states, like Sinaloa, that have not successfully reduced homicide and crime rates. Michoacán was the seventh highest Mexican state for homicides between January and September this year.
