After just a few hours of deliberation, the Barrow County jury returned a guilty verdict on all 29 charges, including:
- Second-Degree Murder: Two counts regarding the students killed.
- Involuntary Manslaughter: Two counts regarding the faculty members killed.
- Cruelty to Children & Reckless Conduct: Multiple counts related to the survivors and the general endangerment of the school.
Why the Prosecution Won
The state’s case centered on criminal negligence. Prosecutors successfully argued that Gray ignored “clear red flags,” specifically highlighting that he purchased an AR-style rifle for his son just months after being interviewed by authorities regarding online threats. The prosecution maintained that providing a high-powered weapon to a minor with documented mental health struggles constituted a total disregard for human life.
